Topic outline

  • General Information on our therapies

At Ysgol pen Coch we provide many therapies that complement and aid pupils progress through the Welsh National Curriculum. All of the therapies are cross referenced with our national Curriculum Assessment tool -B Squared. B Squared has its own website if you wish to find out more about the assessment tool. Suffice to say that it assesses pupils from a pre intentional level and mental age of months (P1) right through to National Curriculum level 5.

Every therapy session has targets related to the pupils needs as well as the curriculum dictates and the assessment of the session is uploaded onto the B Squared assessment programme. The class teacher provides the targets for the therapist to work on.All of our therapists are trained in the therapy that they provide.

Input from experienced, specialist Speech & Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and local authority  Educational Psychologist is available for all pupils, as are individualised programmes to address the specific therapeutic, care and behaviour needs associated with complex learning needs, and the use of specialist therapeutic rooms and facilities.

The Therapeutic Services are fundamental to the operation of the whole school and provide the focus for many of the programmes on which educational attainment is achieved. The whole staff body form part of the therapeutic team in the delivery of all aspects of teaching, learning, care and support. However the school has a wealth of specialists who help ensure focus is maintained on the individual needs and requirements of our pupils

The Therapy Team is an active part of the school and operates at all levels from supporting Individual Education  Programmes, Individual Behaviour plans  to Whole School Strategic Planning. This holistic approach supports the belief that the school's emphasis on  health and well-being as well as structure and routines is therapeutic for children. The Team offers the support and advice of  qualified, experienced staff who  regularly undergo professional development as recommended. Where applicable members of the team are Registered.

The school has group and individual therapy rooms and has the capacity to accommodate visiting professionals and parents. We have the availability of recording equipment where this is considered appropriate. Programmes are monitored by a moderation team.

All children attending Ysgol pen Coch  have the opportunity to be supported by the therapy department. Contact varies from assessment and advice through to longer-term individual or group work..

Sessions with the therapy team come within professional codes of confidentiality, however, brief reports on progress are available together with finishing reports

Therapies currently available at Ysgol Pen Coch are: Rebound Therapy ( using the trampoline for specific mobility/physiotherapy  targets and aligned  to B Squared  ),Sherborne Therapy ( which is a dance communication therapy), Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Play Therapy, Wii Therapy,Speech Therapy, Intensive Interaction Therapy, Therapeutic Music, Tac Pac Therapy( which is a touch therapy), Reflexology, Vision Therapy, Therapeutic Art , vibroacoustic therapy, Auditory Integration therapy, Irlen lens therapy, Lego therapy, Magic therapy ( aids fine motor skills) and  Hydrotherapy.

In our therapy rooms and some of our classrooms we use a Soto  aromatherapy diffuser which helps to create a peaceful and calming haven. The Soto diffuser has colour changing mood lighting, which moves through a rainbow of colours, it can also be set on a single colour of choice. The Soto aroma diffuser also acts as a mini humidifier, creating a cool, scented and relaxing mist which will spread fragrances quickly and effectively. All rooms use the same fragranced  oils on the same day .

All of the therapies happen in specific areas of the school. Parents can request specific therapies at Annual reviews and are given feedback during the review on progress made over the year. Therapists regularly send home updates to parents. Sometimes therapies are given on a rota baisis due to the demand. This also allows for the benefits of the therapies to be evaluated. Teachers complete an evaluation on the benefits seen in class and parents are sent home a questionnaire to complete. All therapies are linked to IEPs and there is a therapies moderation panel consisting of members of the therapy staff and members of SMT. The moderation panel meets regularly to assess and determine the therapeutic input .There   are more detailed individual  descriptions of the therapies in this area of the web site and videos  accompany some of them to give you a flavour of what happens and in some cases the obvious benefits.

The headteacher has delivered presentations at international conferences on the impact of therapeutic intervention and research papers published. Please follow the link to  a book written by therapists and staff at Ysgol Pen Coch  about our work with therapies. All proceeds from the sale of the book goes towards therapeutic development at the school:
